The problem is that it foregoes its' 3D movement exploration of Iwatodai with just a menu-based selection, and does away with the vast majority of cutscenes in favour of static background images with 2D portraits talking at one another with actions being described rather than seen on screen - y'know, like most visual novels. So, it offers a really different playthrough (though the major story beats are generally the same) where characters' interactions with you vary if you choose to play as a female protagonist. Persona 3 Portable's theme is the butterfly effect, how things can change dramatically if something as simple as the biological sex of the protagonist is different.
